Watts Robotics Team Visited By CERN Physicist
In the early morning of May 8, students on the TeraWatts robotics team gathered in a classroom at Animo Watts College Prep Academy for a virtual visit with a CERN scientist.
There, they were connected via Skype to a particle physicist half-way around the world in Geneva’s CERN laboratory- the lab famed for housing the Large Hadron Collider.
American physicist Elodie Resseguie, currently earning her PhD., explained to students some of the questions that researchers at the lab are currently exploring: Are there particles smaller than quarks? What is Dark Matter? What was in existence before the Big Bang?
Students were also inspired by Resseguie’s advice, as she inspired students to go to college and network with professors researching particle physics.
We know it’s important for students to connect with professionals to visualize what they’re working towards in their classes. When students in South L.A. have their horizons broadened, they come to view themselves as capable of entering a wide range of careers.
